Horror Conventions

Three act narrative structure
Predictable narrative content (follows format)
Clear binary oppositions e.g. good v evil, Child vs Adult,
Use of low key lighting, Use of CGI, FX
Dominant representation of gender: Male villain, The Female Victim
Extensive use of close up, Point of view shots, Low angle shots
Young/teenage characters - women are usually the victims
Use of hand-held camera: audience identification/realism. Extreme close ups to show scary face. Two shot (villain and victim)
Characters- teenager victim, antagonist usually men
Non digetic sounds- tense music. Digetic sounds- screams
Settings- abandoned houses, remote locations

Props- knives, guns, rope.
