The Holiday

       Sound:
Sound is very important within a Romance Film to help set the tone mood and atmosphere.
Non-diegetic music is used to reflect the narrative events such as the kissing scene in the opening scene of the film also the narrator through out the opening few minutes.

Diegetic sound is used in the dialogue between the characters when the man on the computer and the women start talking it reveals that there is a spark between them, this shows that the genre is Romance.

      Camera Angles:

A close-up shot is used to show the characters kissing

An establishing shot is used of the setting of the trees and the lake in the background this establishes where the narrative is going to take place.

A two shot is used of the characters kissing to show their relationship

A tracking shot of a man holding a pint of beer follows the action  to reveal to the audience that he is probably going to be one of the main characters in the film.

      Characters:

The main characters are introduced in the opening scene when they are at a party and the women is staring at the man and saying how she loves him but he doesn't even know who she is .the audience recognises that they are the main characters through the use of the dialogue/camera shots/events that they are involved in.

      Narrative Events:

The opening scene features narrative events through the whole of the opening scene explain her thought though the scene.

      Enigma codes:

Enigma codes are used to tease the audience and engage them in the narrative so they carry on watching the film. Certain enigmas are included in the opening such as puzzles about how she met him or knew about him or how she fell in love with him, questions are left unanswered about how they will get together or will they get together

Symbolic codes are shown in the mise-en-scene:

In the opening the audience would identify symbols such as multiple love interests these could make the audience feel/think that there is going to be a lot of relationships within the film

      Props/ costumes:

The audience can see that the character is wearing a wedding dressthis shows that they have just got married this is typical of the genre because its a romance and wedding have a high level of romance in them.

      Clichés:
Noticeable clichés are used in the opening scene such as a women who loves someone and the man does not love her back, this engages the audience as they recognise these features and can predict what is going to happen in the narrative

Target Audience For My Film

As our film will involve blood and jump scares we will have a target audience of 15-25 this is because an older audience do not tend to enjoy these features and prefer a more calm genre such as comedy or romance. We will also target this film at a male gender, this is because our characters are males so they can relate to them whilst watching the film

Action Target Audience

Action films are normally targeted at a male audience between the ages of around 12-50 as it is stereotypical for men to be more into the violence which happens in these types of film. Most male teenagers love an adrenaline burst so watching an action film which feature car chases, crashes, bombs and many more things that leave you on the edge of your seat. As they tend to get older they get less interested in these action type films as they tend to prefer slowed down films such as romance. Action genres are open to both niche and mass target audiences.

Horror Film Target Audience

Horror film target audiences are usually between the age of 16-25. This is because younger audiences seek a thrill which they can get with a horror film. These thrills which horror films give don't tend to entertain an older audience as they are more matured. The young audience are less susceptible to being put off these films by the violence and the unnatural images which may make older audiences feel negative towards the film

Target Audience For My FIlm

The typical target audience of a horror film are between 15-25 this is why horror movies are normally 15 certificate and 18 certificate. This age group are interested in horror films as they want to be scared and get an adrenaline rush during the film. The audience are often male and female (60% male and 40% female) this mostly evenly split therefore we will feature in the film male and female characters in the who are teenagers so the audience can relate to them. Also we will use the recognizable settings of the wood/ park as people often socialize in this area and would be worried about the dramatic events that happen in this opening.

Film Pitch

A slasher horror.

Favourite Director

My favourite director is James Cameron. Cameron was born on 16th August 1954 in Kapuskasing, Ontario Canada. He first found success with the science-fiction hit The Terminator (1984). He then became a popular Hollywood director and was hired to write and direct Aliens (1986); three years later he followed up with The Abyss(1989). Avatar (2009) broke several box office records during its initial theatrical run. It grossed $749.7 million in the United States and Canada and more than $2.74 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time in the United States and Canada, surpassing Cameron's Titanic.

Initial Ideas For Our Film

Main Ideas
The genre of our film is going to be a horror film, we plan to follow the code and conventions of the horror genre and use stereotypical characters such as teenagers in our opening. Also we plan to use a variety of shots such as close ups, match on action and mid shots to engage the audience in the action and narrative events. The initial setting idea is in a forest this can be seen in many horror films as it creates tension for the audience because it is an eerie setting where the audience cannot see where all the characters are. The 'killer' in our horror film will walk around the forest stalking each victim and murdering them, at a point in the film one of the characters will go missing and the rest will have to search for the missing character. This narrative will tease and puzzle the audience and engage them in the opening of our film. The possible sound will be the diegetic when the characters are speaking about trying to find their friend. There will also be rustling of leaves which would create tension for the audience. The possible non diegetic sound would be the strained music when there is a climax in the scene. Another non diegetic sound could be a voice over, this could be when a narrator talks over the film. The narrator of the film is used to tell the story and does not necessarily have to be in the film.

Filming Practice

180 Rule
An imaginary line called the axis connects the characters, and by keeping the camera on one side of this axis for every shot in the scene, the first character is always frame right of the second character, who is then always frame left of the first. The camera passing over the axis is called jumping the line or crossing the line.

Shot Reverse Shot
Shot reverse shot is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character, and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character

The 30 Degree Rule

The rule that a shift in camera angle between successive shots of the same subject should exceed 30 degrees.

Match on Action

Match on action is an editing technique for continuity editing in which one shot cuts to another shot portraying the action of the subject

Rule of Third

The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and their intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section.
